Diabetes and You: Kamp for Kids received a generous donation from Kids with Confidence. For more than two decades, Diabetes and You: Kamp for Kids has strived to provide a normal, affordable camp experience for children who struggle with diabetes. The University of Delaware School of Nursing-led camp provides education, camaraderie and support to children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Campers range from 4- to 16-years-old. When board members from Kids with Confidence arrived, campers of all ages stood to thank them for their donation.

“There was an overwhelming sense of care, respect and love demonstrated during our visit to the camp,” said John Horne, owner of Independence Prosthetics-Orthotics and a Kids with Confidence board member. “We were amazed to learn how far some of the families traveled to take part in the camp. We are grateful to give an opportunity for the kids in attendance to have such an impactful experience.”

Kids with Confidence is a nonprofit that helps children regain their self-assurance, making funds to help correct physical differences that affect children’s self-esteem and confidence.

Because of the complications of diabetes, many of the kids cannot attend or fully participate in typical camps.

“Our board unanimously approved without hesitation to get involved,” continued Horne. “We recognize the challenges of type 1 diabetes and the importance for kids to have the opportunity to feel inclusive and accepted while learning and having fun.”

“As the camp director, I was excited to know that Kids with Confidence supported these families,” added Jennifer Saylor, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing. “These children returned to this new school year knowing that they are not alone and were able to learn about type 1 diabetes with their peers.”

Many day camps cost families in the $350 to $500 range per week. With generous donations from Kids with Confidence and other donors, the UD camp costs only $80.

Saylor concluded, “This is an amazing example for how to non-profit organizations can work well together to improve the physical and psychological well-being of our youth.”
